Woontack Woo is the Inaugural Head of the Graduate School of Metaverse (GSMV) and a Professor in the Graduate School of Culture Technology (GSCT) at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, Korea. He is also the Founding Director of the Augmented Reality Research Center (ARRC) at KAIST and previously served as the Founding Director of the Culture Technology Research Institute (CTRI) at GIST.

He received his B.S. in Electronics Engineering from Kyungpook National University (KNU) in 1989 and his M.S. in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in 1991. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering-Systems from the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, in 1998. Following his Ph.D., he worked as an Invited Researcher at Advanced Telecommunications Research (ATR) in Kyoto, Japan (1999–2001). Prior to joining KAIST, he served as a Professor in the School of Information and Communications (SIC) and Director of the Culture Technology Institute (CTI) at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) from 2001 to 2012.

A pioneer in the field of Mixed and Augmented Reality (MAR), Prof. Woo coined the term "Ubiquitous Virtual Reality (UVR)" in 2001, establishing the theoretical foundations for context-aware Augmented Reality and Spatial Computing. His research focuses on implementing UVR in smart spaces, encompassing Context-aware Augmented Reality, 3D Vision, HCI, and Augmented Humans for the Post-Metaverse era. He has authored influential works with over 10,000 citations and recently received several Best Paper Awards at HCII2014, IEEE ISMAR 2024/2025, IEEE VR 2025, APMAR 2025/2026, etc.

Prof. Woo has held significant leadership roles in the community. He served as the General Co-Chair of IEEE ISMAR 2025/2026 and founded the Korea-Japan Joint Workshop on MAR, which has since evolved into the Asia-Pacific Workshop on Mixed and Augmented Reality (APMAR). He served as the Head of GSCT at KAIST (2020–2022), Chair of the CG&I Society of the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers (KIISE) (2023–2025), and President of the HCI Society of Korea (2014–2016). He has also served as Vice President of the Korea Computer Game Society since 2020, the IEIE Computer Society since 2012, the Korean Institute of Next Generation Computing since 2011, and the Korea Computer Graphics Society since 2008.
